Feast day: November 3

Born in Lima, Peru, Martin was the illegitimate son of a Spanish knight, John de Porres, and a freed Panamanian slave named Anna. After working for several years at a Dominican monastery as a Third Order member, Martin made his profession as a lay brother. He was well known for his compassionate care of the poor and the sick. Martin founded an orphanage, ministered to African slaves, practiced great penances and experienced mystical gifts. He was aided in his ministry efforts by St. Rose of Lima. Martin died in 1639 and was canonized in 1962. He is patron saint of interracial justice and of barbers.

Collect

O God, who led Saint Martin de Porres
by the path of humility to heavenly glory,
grant that we may so follow his radiant example in this life
as to merit to be exalted with him in heaven.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
