The Nativity of the Lord

Feast day: December 25

On December 25, we observe the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Christians in the West have celebrated the feast of the Nativity of Christ on December 25, marking the beginning of the Christmas season.

The Nativity tells the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. There was no room at any of the inns due to the census, so Jesus, the Savior of the world, was born to Mary in a stable. After Jesus’ birth, angels proclaimed him as a Savior for all, and shepherds came to the stable to adore him.

Collect

O God, who wonderfully created the dignity of human nature
and still more wonderfully restored it,
grant, we pray,
that we may share in the divinity of Christ,
who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
